There was a Catholic church around the corner from where I stayed. Heard a lot of bells and singing... I have been told that the congregation observed several minutes of silence to pray for the soul of Princess Di. Many of the islanders I met were Catholic.

As luck would have it, I signed up for an island tour and met a couple from Santiago . Manuel spoke pretty good Engish and his wife, Xinena, understood much of what I had to say. Manuel is a travel agent.
The first place we went was the quarry where the hats for the statues called "moai" were carved. This particular quarry is where all the hats came from. It is the only place on the island where the red volcanic rock can be found. The figure of a birdman is engraved in the stone.
